Blue Mercedes-Benz GLB presented for sale after a pre-sale detail by DJM Detailing, Bendigo

Buyers decide in the first ten seconds, and most of them decide from the photos. A tired-looking car with hazy headlights, swirled paint and a stale interior will sit on Marketplace for weeks and attract lowball offers. The same car after a proper pre-sale detail photographs like it's been garaged its whole life — and it almost always sells quicker and for more than the detail cost.

Our pre-sale service is built around presentation and buyer psychology. We correct the paint so it looks deep and glossy in sunlight, restore the headlights, dress the engine bay, deep clean the interior and remove the odours that quietly kill a sale. We'll even tell you the best time of day and spot around Bendigo to shoot your listing photos.

What's included in a pre-sale detail

  • Full decontamination wash with iron, tar and clay treatment
  • Single-stage machine polish to remove light swirls and restore gloss
  • Headlight restoration if the lenses are hazy or yellowed
  • Exterior trims, badges and black plastics restored
  • Wheels deep cleaned, tyres dressed, arches degreased
  • Engine bay cleaned and dressed (safely — no pressure washing on electrics)
  • Interior deep clean: full vacuum, shampoo and extraction, leather conditioned
  • Odour treatment so it smells neutral, not like air freshener
  • Glass inside and out, door shuts, boot and spare wheel area
  • Sealant applied so it still looks fresh when the buyer inspects it

Why pre-sale detailing pays for itself

A clean, glossy car does three things for a seller. It justifies your asking price — buyers assume a well-presented car has been well maintained. It removes the easy negotiating points — 'it needs a cut and polish', 'the headlights are gone', 'it smells like dog' — that buyers use to knock hundreds off. And it gets more enquiries in the first 48 hours, which is when most private sales happen.

It's also where honesty matters. We don't hide problems — we don't fill scratches with wax or spray tyre shine on a leaking gearbox. We make the car present as the best honest version of itself. Dealers do exactly this to every trade-in before it hits the yard; a private seller who does the same competes on the same footing.

If you're trading in rather than selling privately, a pre-sale detail still pays. Appraisers walk around the car for a couple of minutes and anything that looks like work to them comes off the offer. A detailed car with clear headlights and a clean engine bay reads as 'easy to sell' — and that's reflected in the number.

The pre-sale process

  1. 01

    Quote & timing

Tell us the car and when you plan to list. We'll schedule the detail for a day or two before your photos.

  2. 02

    Interior reset

Everything out, deep vacuum, shampoo and extraction, leather and plastics treated, odours neutralised.

  3. 03

    Exterior correction

Decon wash, clay, then a machine polish to bring the gloss back. Headlights restored, trims revived.

  4. 04

    Finishing touches

Engine bay, wheels, tyres, glass, sealant — plus our photo tips for the best listing shots.

What affects the price

We quote every job individually rather than publishing a one-size price, because these are the things that actually move it:

  • Vehicle size and current condition
  • Whether headlight restoration and engine bay are needed
  • Depth of paint correction required (single-stage is standard; multi-stage available)
  • Interior issues — smoke, pet, mould or heavy staining

Send us the vehicle, suburb and a photo or two and we'll give you a fixed price — no obligation.

Good for

  • Private sellers listing on Marketplace, Carsales or Gumtree
  • End-of-lease and novated lease returns (avoid refurbishment charges)
  • Trade-ins before the appraisal
  • Classic and enthusiast cars going to auction

Pre-Sale Detailing questions

How much more will my car sell for after a pre-sale detail?

It depends on the car, but in our experience a detailed car sells quicker and avoids the 'needs a polish / smells / headlights' negotiation that routinely costs sellers several hundred dollars or more. On most cars the detail comfortably pays for itself.

When should I book the pre-sale detail?

One to three days before you take your listing photos. That way the car is at its best in the photos and still looks fresh for the first inspections.

Can you get rid of cigarette or pet smells before I sell?

Yes. Odour removal is part of the pre-sale service. For heavy smoke or mould we may recommend our full interior restoration service, which includes ozone treatment.

Will you touch up stone chips or scratches?

We polish out light scratches and swirls. Deep scratches and stone chips are a paint job, not a detail — we'll tell you honestly what will and won't come out before we start.

Do you do lease return details?

Yes. We know the common inspection points on novated and fleet lease returns and can present the vehicle to avoid avoidable refurbishment charges.
