Paint Correction Explained: Swirls, Stages and What's Actually Possible

Paint correction is the most misunderstood part of detailing. Here's a plain-English guide to what it is, what it fixes and where it stops.

Swirls: where they come from

Swirl marks are thousands of fine scratches in the clear coat, caused by grit being dragged across the paint — brush car washes, dirty wash mitts, dry dusting, bad drying towels. In diffuse light they're invisible; in direct sun or under a torch they appear as a spider-web haze that dulls the colour. Dark cars show them worst.

How correction works

Clear coat is typically 40–60 microns thick. Swirls live in the top few microns. A machine polisher with an abrasive compound levels the surface down to the bottom of the defects so they're physically gone — not filled, not hidden. The skill is in removing the minimum material to get the result, which is why we measure paint thickness and test a spot first.

Single-stage uses one medium polish: removes light swirls, restores most gloss. Two-stage adds a heavier cutting step first for deeper defects and a refining step after. Multi-stage and wet sanding tackle severe defects and orange peel, with real clear-coat cost, and are only for cars with thickness to spare.

What can't be fixed by polishing

The fingernail test: if you can catch a scratch with a fingernail, it's usually through the clear coat into colour or primer and needs paint repair. Stone chips are the same. Clear coat failure — the peeling, milky patches on older cars — can't be polished; it's gone. Anyone promising to 'polish out' these is filling them with glaze that washes out in weeks. We'd rather tell you what won't come out before we start.

Keeping it corrected

Correction removes defects; it doesn't stop new ones. Protect the corrected paint with a ceramic coating, wash it with the two-bucket method and skip the brush washes, and it'll stay that way for years. Correct it and go straight back to the car wash and you'll be swirled again by Christmas.
